Hey everyone, I’ve got a mixed update for you today.

As you know, we’ve had several polls recently where I asked for your input on the future of BBMOD. Based on those results, I created a new GitHub issue for BBMOD 4, updated the website and README, and even started development. Here’s a small preview of what was in the works:

However, a few days ago I decided to take down both the GitHub issue and the announcements. Not because BBMOD 4 is cancelled -- it isn’t -- but because I’m putting it on hold.

For the next major release, I want to deliver the best possible performance along with the most ambitious features. To achieve that, BBMOD 4 will need to use C++ extensions. Right now, GameMaker isn’t in a great place for this:

The current runner (GMS2) doesn’t support such extensions across all platforms -- which, according to the polls, is very important to many of you.
The upcoming GMRT runner is expected to support them, but it’s not ready for production yet.

Starting BBMOD 4 now would be risky, since I’d likely have to rewrite large parts of it once GMRT is released. That’s why I think it’s wiser to wait.

That said -- no need to be discouraged! Development won’t be standing still. There’s still a lot of room to expand BBMOD 3, starting with features like animation layers, already available in the bbmod3 branch, along with other improvements:

So while BBMOD 4 will take a bit longer to arrive, BBMOD 3 still has exciting updates on the way. Thanks so much for your support and understanding! ❤️🙏

everyone I forgot to add that a C++ extension would mean limiting the export to desktop platforms only (Windows, Mac and Linux). Feel free to change your vote based on that
